Keep Your Business Safe

July 19th saw the 4th Step of the Government’s Road Map implemented as all businesses were legally able to reopen.

Although restrictions have been relaxed, as an employer you are still expected to provide a safe place of work, and insurers will require you to control your workplace risks and review and update your risk assessment.  It’s important that this is specific to your business.

There is undoubtedly a high focus on ensuring businesses are Covid safe for employees and visitors.

Businesses must ensure they continue to manage their Covid-19 exposure, reducing the likelihood of putting their people and the public at risk of contracting the virus.  The following workplace controls remain in force:

  • adequate ventilation
  • sufficient cleaning
  • good hand hygiene

You must continue to consult your workforce on health and safety matters.  Talking to workers and their representatives helps to reduce risk.

Despite the relaxing of the regulations, HSE have advised that the Covid-19 spot checks and inspections at businesses will remain (as at 31.08.2021)   I know some of you have already undergone checks.

Since last year, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have been carrying out spot checks and inspections on all types of businesses, in all areas, to ensure they are Covid-secure. They are making calls so that they can give expert advice on how to manage the risks and protect workers, customers, and suppliers.

Inspectors from approved partners that visit premises will be carrying identification from their business and a letter of authorisation from the HSE. If you want to verify the authenticity of an inspector that calls or visits your business, you can call 0300 790 6896.

Obviously, in the event of a call or spot check you should participate fully. Failure to do so could lead to enforcement action.
